Proposed Event for 2021  - “You Yangs Region 1850s”

We invite local community groups and individuals to join us in planning a heritage event on the theme of “You Yangs Region 1850s” to be held in 2021.

We are a group who promote the outstanding cultural and natural heritage of the You Yangs Region by providing community and visitor information and holding occasional events.

  • In 2018 we ran “Before 1850”, a self-drive heritage tour through the You Yangs Region with community groups in Anakie, Balliang, Lara and Little River, and in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners. Held as part of the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival, the event benefited from free publicity and an Australia wide focus on heritage.

Proposed event

For 2021 we will again invite community groups to work with us and the Wadawurrung Corporation on the theme “You Yangs Region 1850s”. We will explore aspects of settlement in this region including separation from NSW, the gold rush, railway building and land sales. Along with local events (subject to any COVID restrictions), we plan to hold an on-line ‘round table’ to discuss Wadawurrung, environmental, historical, architecture/built environment, local community and government perspectives on our 1850s heritage.

The weekend will showcase our Region and help to develop appreciation of our heritage for the benefit of our communities, visitors and local hospitality/tourism businesses. A number of contemporary developments make 2021 an especially relevant time to focus on the You Yangs Region – see list below.

We have provisionally set the weekend of May 7-8 (Mother’s Day weekend) for a two-day sequence of events, but would vary this if requested. We will again register with the Australian Heritage Festival if the National Trust is able to re-establish this in 2021.
