Riverside Reserves – A guided walk in Little River - Saturday 11 May 2019

This was a great traditional Wadawurrung Welcome to Country & Smoking Ceremony thanks to Corrina Eccles and Melinda Kennedy.

Then we headed off on a walk through our riverside reserves with Corrina and Melinda to learn about the Little River's ancient heritage, with additional comments from Little River Community Landcare and the Little River Historical Society.

After a Welcome to Country & Smoke Cleansing Ceremony in the John Rees Reserve, Old Melbourne Road, the walk with Wadawurrung Cultural Educators across the Rothwell Bridge, through the Rothwell Reserve & visit the McLeans Road weir, Bulls & Newland Reserves.

Morning tea was served in the Mechanics Institute Hall where there was a district heritage and environmental display organised by the Little River Historical Society, Community Landcare & Mechanics Institute Library.

The walk continued over the railway line, visiting the Sports Reserve & finally the Bulban/MacNaughton Reserve adjacent to the Grant Bridge.

The Riverside Reserves Walk was the opening event of the Little River Heritage Weekend & there was an opportunity to join in other activities, mostly free, to be held over the two days as part of the National Trust, Australian Heritage Festival.

After dark walk at Mount Rothwell - evening of Saturday 11 May 2019.

Two groups experienced a torchlight walk in Victoria's largest predator free ecosystem and saw some of Australia's most threatened animals ... including the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Red Bellied Pademelon & Eastern Quoll ... in their largely remnant native grassland habitat near the You Yangs.

The Mount Rothwell Conservation and Research Centre is a privately owned property that undertakes research in restoring habitat and completing ecosystems to ensure that threatened species populations can be protected from extinctions. It is regarded by its owners as an investment in nature.
